It's Fall and Pests are STILL here!!

Posted by lhvs on September 10, 2013

Hello Everyone!!

Fall is fast approaching with cooler weather and the leaves beginning to change. I must admit this is my favorite time of year. Everyone is preparing for winter weather and hanging up fall decorations.

There are also some things you should think about for your pets as the weather changes. Fleas and ticks are a problem year round for pets! Cooler weather doesn't mean that there are no pests to contend with. Fleas are usually killed off with a couple of frosts, but this will not kill nests living inside your home or other buildings that provide them shelter. Ticks however can withstand several good frosts and will even thrive in mild winters. Fleas and ticks are extremely resilient, afterall they have been around for millions of years.

Ticks can spread Lyme Disease to you and your pets. They also may spread Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis in our region. Lyme Disease can be a debilatating illness causing lameness, fever, swollen joints, and in rare cases fatal kidney disease. Fleas can spread tapeworms to you and your pets if ingested. Not to mention, they are extremely annoying pests! Some pets are allergic to the saliva in the flea bite causing a painful skin issue. They can also make young, old, weak pets become dangerously anemic (low red blood cells).

Thankfully with modern technology we have several options for flea and tick preventatives/treatments. Such as Advantix II, Frontline Plus, and the newest addition to our current stock, Seresto Collar. Be cautious buying products over-the-counter. Many of these products are not very effective and cause reactions on your pets skin. Also most products not purchased through a veterinarian will lose the product's guarantee.

Protect your pets and keep them pest free!!
